Dharamshala: “The Wuhan originated coronavirus which has changed everyday life around the world teaches us an important lesson that the present institutional mechanism is not adequate to approach the things as they are now. New thinking and paradigm shift in the education system are needed to change people’s mindset” said President Dr. Lobsang Sangay of the Central Tibetan Administration during a virtual session on the global pandemic.
The session hosted by MIT World Peace University featured distinguished speakers like Maulana Mahmood Madani – General Secretary, Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind & Former Member of Parliament, and Kavita A. Sharma, President of South Asian University.
President Dr Sangay argued that a reasonable change is required in the education system to teach young children inner values like compassion and empathy over materialistic values.
“We need an education that not only teaches brain but mind and heart as well”, he said.
He added that the global pandemic facing the world today is the learning opportunity for world leaders and governments to transform the global order and mechanisms against materialistic attitude. Life won’t be the same after the pandemic is over but that should not matter much as reshaping the world does.
President Dr Sangay alleged that China should be held accountable without a reservation for the coronavirus that disrupted all aspects of life. He blamed the lack of transparency and democracy in China for the present global situation.
“Because China refused to share the information to the rest of the world when the virus first broke out in Wuhan, it has prevented the world and people to prepare and deal with the outbreak” added President Sangay and concluded that the issue stems from the authoritarian regime and its limited and narrow mindset.
