Dharamshala: Patient Trust Care (PCT), a medical trust NGO based in Delhi which provides assistance in accessing quality medical care to Tibetans in exile, organised a 3-day health camp in Tsuglagkhang, Dharamshala today. It is supported by the Department of Health, CTA and USAID, The Tibet Fund. Prof Samdhong Rinpoche is one of the advisors of this NGO which was founded by Sonam Wangyal in 2012.
Individual stalls were set up, with sections marked for Ortho, Onco, Gastro, Paeds and Gynae. A good number of Tibetans came for the free consultation offered by expert medical practitioners of renowned institutes from Delhi( AIIMS, Safdarjung, NITRD, Kalawati Saran Children’s Hospital, Guru Nanak Eye Center, RML Hospital), Tanda Medical College H.P. at the camp. The Department of Health staff and volunteers supported the programme, with registration and consultation, and collection of donations. The Additional Secretary of the Department of Health arrived at the camp and briefly spoke to the press on the benefits of such programmes for the Tibetan community.
Director Sonam Wangyal also laid out the purpose of the programme, that is “to provide advocacy and support in accessing medical care. In practical terms, this results in the following benefits: elimination of malpractice; cost reduction for medical care; access to qualified top specialists; support for language issues; support in logistics management; financial support for the most destitute.”
He added, “The current demand for medical care among the poor in the Tibetan exile community far exceeds the funds available for such care therefore any support will be highly appreciated for the cause.”
