'Ileana Ros Lehtinen addresses the Congressional Gold Medal Ceremony

Ileana Ros Lehtinen
His Holiness, Mr President, First lady Mrs Laura Bush, Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Leader Byrd,Ladies and Gentlemen.

It is honour for me to have played a small role in highlighting the efforts and the works of His Holiness by introducing along with my good friend Chairman Tom Lantos, the house version of legislation that is going to award him the congressional gold medal today. Through this award we are recognising his life long advocacy on behalf of peace, tolerance, human rights, non-violence and religious understanding, as well as his holistic efforts on behalf of six million Tibetan people who continue to support under the iron grip Beijing communist rulers. They continue to brave systematic attack aimed at destroying their national and cultural identities. But they do not waiver, they do not falter, they know the truth and justice will prevail over evil and repression. Their guide and inspiration is His Holiness the Dalai Lama but the effort of this blessed man are not limited to Tibet. His wisdom and compassion, transcend national boundaries. He has said, may I come at all times, both now and forever- a protector for the helpless, a guide for the lost ones, a shipfor those to cross oceans, a bridge to cross rivers, a sanctuary for those in danger, a lamp for those in darkness, a refuge for those who need shelter and servant to all in need.I believe that this clearly explain why we are honoring him today.

I offer His Holiness the Dalai Lama a profound congraluation.

Thank you
