Media briefing by two envoys of His Holiness the Dalai Lama
Time: 10:00 am, Thursday
Date: 8 May 2008
Venue: Lhakpa Tsering Hall, Department of Information and International Relations (DIIR), Central Tibetan Administration, Gangchen Kyishong, Dharamsala, India
The two envoys of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Lodi Gyaltsen Gyari and Kelsang Gyaltsen, will brief media tomorrow in Dharamsala, following the one-day talks on Tibet in the Chinese city of Shenzhen on Sunday, 4 May.
Lodi Gyaltsen Gyari, Special Envoy to His Holiness the Dalai Lama, said today that the talks were a "good first step". The talks on Sunday ended with an agreement to meet again, although no date was set. In a statement issued prior to their departure to China at the weekend, the envoys said that their main concern was to address the current crisis in Tibet as an unprecedented wave of protests in support of His Holiness the Dalai Lama across the Tibetan plateau from 10 March have been met by a brutal crackdown.
Lodi Gyaltsen Gyari and Kelsang Gyaltsen will brief His Holiness the Dalai Lama in Dharamsala before speaking to the press at the meeting tomorrow. This was the first face to face communication with the Chinese side since the sixth session of dialogue between the envoys and Beijing in July 2007, and the first direct discussion since the wave of protests began in Tibet on 10 March.
* Media briefing will be telecast live on www.tibetonline.tv
