Kalachakra postponed till next winter: Statement by Kalon Tripa Samdhong Rinpoche

25 January, 2002

24 January, 2002: The Kashag welcomes the decision of His Holiness the Dalai Lama to postpone the Kalachakra teachings due to His Holiness, at the moment, easily succumbing to exhaustion and tiredness. The Kashag was eager to request for this postponement since His Holiness was indisposed at Patna a week earlier. For the six million Tibetans and millions of Buddhist followers and supporters worldwide, there is nothing more important and precious than the continued good health and long life of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

The Tibetans in Tibet, those in exile, the millions of the followers of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Tibet supporters throughout the world will continue to pray, as always, for the long life and the good health of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

As explained by His Holiness this morning to the thousands of devotees gathered in Bodh Gaya, last week, while on a pilgrimage to Nalanda and the Vulture's Peak, His Holiness suffered from a mild form of gastroenteritis. His personal physicians are happy with the progress of the recovery of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. However, His Holiness is still susceptible to exhaustion and tiredness.

We are confident that no one will be disappointed by this postponement. This is because, as explained by His Holiness the Dalai Lama to the thousands of devotees gathered in Bodh Gaya, "the reason why you are here is because of your great motivations to spiritually benefit from being in such a sacred place and because of this, you will have accumulated great merit for every step you take."

We will announce the exact dates of next year's Kalachakra teachings in Bodh Gaya sometime soon.

His Holiness will leave Bodh Gaya on January 29, and will be back in Dharamsala on February 1, 2002.

Samdhong Rinpoche
Chairman of Kashag (Cabinet)
