Department of Health

Introduction

"Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well being and not merely the absence of disease or deformity. Health is a basic and elementary need for the general welfare and development of any community."

In December 1981, the Department of Health (DoH) was established as an apex body within the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) to manage and finance health care centers as well as to plan a comprehensive health care system for the Tibetans in exile. The Department has been organizing and maintaining health care programs as well as health education campaigns. It also provides basic health care for both Tibetans and local Indian residents of the area. In its basic health care policy, the DoH has adopted the goal of ?Health For All?.

Currently, the Department of Health is working towards the integration of traditional system of Tibetan medicine with the allopathic Primary Health Care system in order to avail maximum benefits. The two systems of medicine run in parallel to each other and are used equally by the people; increasing the frequency of referral process between the two health care systems.

Aims

  • To provide adequate, equitable and holistic primary health care services to all Tibetan refugees through Primary Health Care system integrated with the major traditional systems of medicine.
  • To create and expand public health program in the community for disease prevention, promote healthier lifestyles and a cleaner environment.
