His Holiness the Dalai Lama to visit the Baltic States

Budapest, 12 June 2001: (Tibet House Foundation) His Holiness the Dalai Lama will be visiting the three Baltic States - Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania in the third week of June in his continued efforts to strengthen the religious and cultural ties between the Tibetan people and the communities in these countries. This visit to the region, taking place from June 18 to 26, 2001, includes talks at universities, meetings with religious and other leaders and Public Talks in five cities.

His Holiness first visited the Baltic States in 1991.

His Holiness will be in Estonia from June 18 to 20, during which he will give a major lecture at the University of Tartu, entitled: Ethics for the New Millennium

From June 21 to 23, His Holiness is visiting Latvia. One of his engagements includes a lecture at the Latvian Academy of Sciences on Ethics and Science. His Holiness will also participate a Sand Mandala - wheel of life - to be created by Tibetan monks from Nepal.

His Holiness’ last stop in the region includes a visit to Lithuania from June 24 to 26, 2001. His Holiness visits two cities, Vilnius and Kaunas. His programs include meetings with the Faculty of the University of Vilnius, blessing of a Sand Mandala of Avalokesteshvra – to be constructed by Tibetan monks from India.

"His Holiness the Dalai Lama will take the opportunity to exchange ideas with citizens of these countries on their experience in coping with their post-independent challenges," said Chhime R. Chhoekyapa, Representative of His Holiness the Dalai Lama for Central, S.E. Europe and the Baltic States. "The Baltic States have traditionally been sympathetic to the Tibetan situation because of their own experience under the former Soviet Union," Chhoekyapa added.

From Lithuania, His Holiness leaves for Verona, Italy on 27 June 2001.
