Result of the preliminary round of Kalon Tripa election

29 May, 2001: The result of the preliminary round of election of the Kalon Tripa or the chair of the Kashag (Cabinet) which took place on May 12 2001 was announced today by Namgyal Dorjee, the Election Commissioner, Central Tibetan Administration.

As laid down by the recent amendment to election process of Kalon Tripa, the Election Commissioner announced the list of the top six candidates. Following are the top six candidates from the preliminary round.

A final list after withdrawals, if any, of not less than two candidates will then be voted upon on July 29 2001. From them, the candidate securing the majority of votes will be appointed by His Holiness the Dalai Lama as the Kalon Tripa. Their term in office will be five years. Thus elected, the Kalon Tripa will nominate 7 ministers to form his Cabinet.
