Dharamshala: A number of monks were detained in Drepung Monastery in Tibet on 12 April after they protested against Chinese efforts to denounce His Holiness the Dalai Lama, says rights group Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD).

"Security forces were called into the monastery by the "Work Team" to control the monks who protested the arrival of a "Work Team" on "Legal and Information Education," reported TCHRD.

The centre's report further said, "A number of Tibetan monks were immediately detained and taken away to unknown location by the security forces for interrupting and protesting the campaign. There is no information on the condition and whereabouts of those detainees."

A heavy security of Chinese armed police sealed off all roads leading towards Drepung Monastery. The movements of the monks in the monastery were severely restricted with security personnel curbing access to outside visitors to the monastery including devotees, noted the report.
