Dharamshala: The United States' Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said on Monday that the US would encourage the process of dialogue, which is the most sustainable policy to resolve the issue of Tibet. She was giving a joint press statement with the Indian External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukerjee in Washington DC.

She said " violence is not acceptable and the answer for Tibet is to have a more sustainable policy for the Chinese Government concerning Tibet, adding that China should exercise restraint to deal with the current situation in Tibet."

She further said that His Holiness the Dalai Lama could play a very favourable role, given his belief in non-violence and his stated position of seeking genuine autonomy rather than complete independence.
