Dharamshala: "The Tibetan Chamber of Commerce (TCC) should not only work with a profit motive. It has to assume corporate social responsibilities towards the environment and for the Tibetan cause, Kalon Tripa Prof. Samdhong Rinpoche said today at the opening of the first annual general meeting of the TCC.

Since the TCC is a non-governmental organisation, Kalon Tripa said, it should formulate its own plans and policies without seeking advice from the Central Tibetan Administration. Adding that, "That government is best which governs the least."

He said his administration would provide the necessary financial assistance for its activities till this young chamber grows into a full-fledged organisation.

Congratulating the achievements of the TCC within last one year, Kalon Tripa said the Tibetan business community has successfully established this organisation as proposed by the CTA so as to look after the welfare of the Tibetan businessmen, to notify the Tibetan business community about the financial policies of the CTA and to go shoulder to shoulder with the international business community.

Kalon Tripa highlighted the importance of carrying out the economic activities in accordance with the financial policy and law of the host country.

He said it is important to abide by the concept of liberalisation, privatisation and globalisation as these are the key for economic development.

Kalon Tripa also released the Chamber's Member Business Directory.

The TCC chairman, Dorjee W Dewatshang, in his address threw light on the objectives, achievements and future plans of the TCC. The vice-chair, Tsetan Norbu, also addressed the function.

Present at the function were speaker of the Tibetan Palilament-in-exile, T. T Karma Chophel, standing committee members of the Tibetan parliament, secretaries of the various departments of the CTA and around 50 businessmen from India, Nepal, US and Russia.

TCC, the first association of the Tibetan businessmen, was established volountarily by the Tibetan business community with the help of the Department of Finance, CTA, during the first Tibetan business conference held in June 2005. It was started to enhance and promote the business interest of its members and Tibetan business community as a whole.
