Trulku’s Sentence Could be Commuted, says Official Chinese Media

Dharamsala, 31 December: This New Year may bring a little light at the end of the tunnel for Tibetans and Tibet supporters who have been campaigning for the release of Trulku Tenzin Delek. Trulku, who awaits in the Chinese government’s death row, was sentenced to death on 2 December 2002.

A death sentence handed to a Tibetan monk over a spate of bombings could be commuted to life in jail, reuters quoted the official Xinhua news agency.

Trulku’s two-year reprieve was to end on 26 January 2005 and his sentence could be commuted to life in prison if he did not violate the law, Xinhua had said.

Trulku "had abided by the rules in jail and committed no further crimes", the chief warden of the prison where he is being held had told Xinhua.

The Higher People's Court of Sichuan would revisit the case after the probation period had ended, Xinhua had reported.
