ATPD Greets Bush

Dharamsala 6 November: The Assembly of the Tibetan People’s Deputies congratulated the US president-elect George W. Bush who won his second term.

In a letter addressed to George Bush, Mr. Pema Jungney, the Chairman of the ATPD, expressed his pleasure over the Republican candidate’s retaining of the White House.

"Your victory also demonstrates the strong support of the American people and their confidence in your leadership over the last four years".

Mr. Jungney also appealed for the continuation of the office of the Special Coordinator for Tibet during his governance.

Expressing his gratitude to Mr. Bush’s meeting with His Holiness the Dalai Lama despite protests from China, Mr. Jungney wrote, " we are especially grateful for your support in terms of meeting with His Holiness the Dalai lama and the promotion of concrete dialogue between the People’s Republic of China and the Dalai Lama. Besides, the government of United States had contributed enormously in improving human rights situation in Tibet and played a significant role in releasing political prisoners of Tibet over the years."

Mr. Jungney also thanked the US government for its financial assistance to the Tibetan refuges in India, Nepal and Bhutan.

He also urged the US government to exert pressure on the Chinese leadership to release Trulku Tenzin Delek who awaits a reprieved death sentence which expires soon.
