Tibet Raised in Canadian Parliament

Dharamsala 21 October: The Canadian parliamentarians heard about Tibet in the House of Commons on Monday, courtesy Richard Marceau, a Canadian Member of Parliament.

Marceau told the house that the invasion of Tibet by China in 1959 resulted in many catastrophic consequences and that more than one million Tibetans, representing one sixth of the whole Tibetan population, died due to the Chinese occupation.

Inviting his fellow parliamentarians to facilitate negotiations between Beijing and Dharamsala, Marceau called on the house to sign a petition initiated by Canada Tibet Committee urging the Canadian Government to encourage resolution of the Tibet issue through negotiations.

Briefing the house about deplorable political situation in Tibet he said that Tibetans had suffered from the imprisonments and tortures that were inflicted on them for having pacifically resisted the occupation or simply practicing their religion.

He also told the house about restrictions imposed by China on the Tibetans to possess photographs of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
