Slovenian PM on Human Rights in China

Dharamsala 22 December: The Prime Minister of Slovenia Anton Rop had said he supports EU China dialogue on human rights. Mr. Rop was speaking on the Slovenian National Television in a news bulletin aired on 3 December 2003 after his return from a visit to China early this month.
On asked if Slovenian side today raised the question of respecting human rights in China, Mr. Rop answered affirmatively.
Talking about human rights in China and independence of Taiwan and Tibet, Prime Minister Rop stated that Ljubljana officially follows the EU policy and that his government’s position is to support the one-China policy. “We are aware that it is about the integrity of the country, but on the other side it is important to be sensitive about human rights and other problems, which arise along with it", Rop added.
Meanwhile, the local Amnesty International and Tibet Support Group-Slovenia submitted a petition to Mr. Anton Rop before his departure to China. According to TSG-Slovenia, more than 1000 Slovenians have signed a petition calling for respect for human rights in China and Tibet. The Mr. Janez Jansa, President of the Slovenian Social Democrats - a political party of Slovenia, is now supporting this campaign initiated by the TSG-Slovenia.
