BRISTOL: Tibetan community in Bristol celebrated the 83rd birthday of His Holiness the Dalai Lama on Friday, 6 July at the Upper Horfield Community Trust in Bristol with an open and free event to all.
Labour Party’s Hon Kerry McCarthy MP, Member for Bristol East since May 2015, was the Chief Guest at the celebrations. The event was attended by the Tibetan community, local supporters and friends.
Young Tibetan children, who are taught Tibetan language, music and dance every Sunday at the Upper Horfield Community Trust, entertained the audience with Tibetan songs and dances, accompanied by their teachers.
In her address on the special occasion, Hon Kerry McCarthy referred to the global respect that His Holiness the Dalai Lama has commanded for His message of love and compassion and expressed her honour to be part of the celebrations in the company of Tibetans and locals alike.
Speaking about her strong support to urge the Liverpool Football Club to end the deal with Tibet Water Resources Ltd. for which she has helped get support from her Parliamentary colleagues, she assured to continue her work on this with Tibet Society.
A strong advocate for environmental protection, she drew the attention of the world to Tibet’s fragile environment and called on the Chinese authorities to respect ages old local custom, culture and environment practice for the preservation of this strategic ‘‘Third Pole’’.
Mandie McKeown of International Campaign for Tibet spoke about the status of the Tibet movement drawing from the Europe International Tibet network meeting that concluded recently in Italy.
The event ended with Tibetan group dance (gorshey), joined in by all members and Tibetan delicacies were delicacies.
